Visit to former
MOTBY, (Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne Naval Supply
Center) Tear of Grief Memorial, Visit to Statue of
Liberty and Ellis Island
Chaplain Mark Rucker gave a
touching memorial service at the Tear of Grief
Memorial. MOTBY, at Bayonne, NJ, was an arrival point
for many NYC evacuees on 9/11. The statue offers a
direct view of the Statue of Liberty and the former WTC
towers. As our Sitkin shipmates closed their eyes, they
could once again visualize the USS Great Sitkin moored
there.
A ferry transported us to
both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Ellis
Island was the nations main point of entry for millions
of immigrants 1892-1954. The Statue of Liberty was a
gift to the U.S. from France. In 1886, the Statue was
dedicated in commemoration of the two countries
alliance during the American Revolution. Measuring 151
feet high on a 154 foot-high pedestal, it is the tallest
statue of modern times.
