Friday,
September 13th,
Mount Vernon & Quantico National Cemetery
for the Honor Ceremony(cont.)
Our next visit
was to Mount Vernon, George Washingtons
home. Overlooking the Potomac River, George
Washington lived here from 1759 until his
death in 1799. The mansion has been restored
to appear as it was during the last year of
his life and contains much of the original
furniture. We were able to tour the gardens
and shuttle to the Distillery & Gristmill
which are still fully functioning. Pioneer
Farm has a 16-sided threshing barn on site.
This unique two-story barn was invented by
George Washington as a way to improve
processing wheat by automating the removal
of the edible grain from the husks and straw
using horses.
